The mother of a man from Indianapolis who was discovered dead in a tanning bed at Planet Fitness is recalling his last moments.
Indianapolis man discovered dead
On the morning of Monday, November 11, Derek Sink’s body was found at the Hardegan Street gym franchise. According to the Indianapolis Star, Sink entered the tanning bed for the first time on Friday, November 8. His age was 39.
Karen Wetzel, Sink’s mother, talked on Wednesday, November 13, about his final days as his family deals with the unexpected loss.
According to Wetzel, Sink purchased a gym membership at Planet Fitness on Friday. He went to a nearby TJMaxx with his girlfriend Heather and her daughter.
Sink was wearing an ankle monitor, but they couldn’t find him when they returned to the gym, so they assumed he had fled. His automobile was still there when they arrived at the parking lot. But it was shifted one space away from where he had parked at first.
Wetzel tells that this is when Heather and Ava initially thought anything was amiss. They checked adjacent strip malls and Planet Fitness for Sink, but were unable to locate him. After they returned home, Sink’s grandma called to inquire about his whereabouts. On Sunday, Nov. 10, they reported him missing after failing to find him.
On Monday, Sink’s probation officer visited Planet Fitness, his last known address, and discovered her son in tanning bed.
Wetzel also claims that a syringe was discovered in Sink’s room, indicating that he was struggling with heroin addiction. She claims she is certain that fentanyl will be discovered in his system by the time the toxicology report is completed.
Despite his difficult past, she claims that Sink was “a human being with value and worth.”
Wetzel remembers her “beautiful” son, Sink, who was also the father of a 20-year-old boy, working at a halfway house to aid people with physical or mental challenges and trying to change his life.
