Facts On Birdsong

Serenity’s active community, MT Lambda, honored her memory on social media and canceled scheduled events.

Serenity’s partner is supported by a GoFundMe effort, demonstrating the compassion of the community.
In response, MTSU placed a strong emphasis on student mental health resources.

On Monday, October 28, 2024, transgender student Serenity Birdsong committed suicide on campus in the James E. Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU).

On campus, there has been a strong outpouring of grief and sympathy since learning of her loss.

In response, MTSU gave staff and students time to grieve by temporarily closing the library and canceling classes on Tuesday. Even though classes started up again on Wednesday, Serenity’s death is still having a significant impact.

To honor her and her loved ones’ privacy, the circumstances surrounding her death have not been made public.

Birdsong was a very involved person at MTSU, particularly in MT Lambda, where she worked hard to make the campus a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ students.

She is described by her friends and peers as kind and positive, traits that made an influence on everyone she came into contact with.

On Wednesday, October 30 at 6 p.m., the SGA will host a vigil outside the library to support the bereaved community, bringing students.

Other campus groups have rescheduled their usual events to host support sessions in remembrance of Serenity.

Anyone who would like to attend is welcome to the critical event stress debriefing that Alpha Omicron Pi is holding in House 1 on Greek Row on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, New Vision Church will hold a night of worship and provide counseling services through The Point, a college ministry.
