As a part of Channel 4’s Shoot To Kill: Terror On The Tube, the guns officer, who has been nameless for almost 20 years, has discussed his actions in public for the primary time.
He claimed that after identifying Jean Charles de Menezes as a suspect, his behavior made him think the Brazilian national was going to set off a bomb.
On July 21, would-be suicide bombers once more targeted the transit network, but their bombs did not detonate.
Since they were connected to the same apartment complex, Jean Charles de Menezes, a 27-year-old electrician, was mistaken for one of the suspects the next day.
Officers followed him onto the train carriage at Stockwell Tube station in south London, where two gunmen shot him seven times.
The way Mr. De Menezes stood up, according to the firearms officer, who went by C12, “triggered” something inside of him.
Scotland Yard verified on July 23 that Mr. de Menezes had nothing to do with the July 21 attacks.
The operation that resulted in Mr. de Menezes’ death was conducted by Dame Cressida Dick, who was elevated to the position of Metropolitan Police Commissioner in 2017.
At the conclusion of the Met’s case under health and safety laws, a jury exonerated her of any responsibility for his death.
The prime minister at the time, Sir Tony Blair, remembers hearing about the 7/7 attacks while he was in a bilateral meeting with the Chinese president.
