Jim Carrey’s older sister Rita Carrey passed away on November 14, as her husband Alex revealed on Facebook on November 15.
Despite having been together for 16 years, Alex and Rita, who was born and raised in Canada, only got married last July “in an outdoor wedding that she has always wanted.”
Rita Carrey, husband Alex shares his emotional message
“We travelled the world and met many people who we consider friends,” he said. “Rita was my lovely wife, my lover, and my closest friend. Rita Carrey always wanted to serve everyone, even complete strangers, because she had a compassionate soul.
Alex and his lifelong partner also exchanged life lessons.
According to her spouse, the radio and television personality’s favorite holiday was Christmas. He made a joke about how the holiday “was everyday for her” and even inspired her to launch “a fundraiser to help a local charity.”
He used a passage from James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover” to close his letter to Rita, adding, “Until we meet again.” It was truly the time of your life. Alex is your husband and best friend.
Families and friends were “invited to attend a candlelight vigil in Rita Carrey’s memory on December 7 2024 on Heathcote Terrace in St. Catharines,” according to Alex’s post, which also urged everyone to attend the public Christmas on the Terrace event in support of Gillian’s Place, a shelter for survivors of abuse and violence located in Ontario. In Rita honor, he also requested that gifts be sent straight to the organization.
Rita was one of the Mask actor’s three older siblings, along with sister Patricia Carrey and brother John Carrey, who died in 2019. Rita was born to Kathleen and Percy Carrey.
Rita Carrey performed with the Rita Band, a self-titled classic rock group, and worked as a radio host for many years, most recently with Pete Dychtiar on The Peet and Reet Show.
