American YouTuber Johnny Somali, 24, has issued an apology after causing controversy in Korea by kissing a statue of a girl that represents Korean victims of sexual slavery during the war.
Viewers, however, are dubious despite his apologies because Somali has posted a number of contentious images and videos on his social media pages.
Video of Johnny Somali
The YouTube channel Jcompany shared a video of Somali visiting the girl statue in Seoul’s Dobong District’s Changdong History and Culture Park on Thursday, in which he expressed regret to the Korean people.
The history of Japan’s wartime sex slavery, or more euphemistically, the “comfort women,” who survived these horrors, was another topic Somali mentioned as being of interest. He expressed his willingness to speak with the survivors face-to-face, conduct interviews with them, and find out more about their past.
A video of Somali dancing and lying down in a subway car is among the other controversial content that hasn’t been taken down. Some content is still there even after Somali removed videos showing him disturbing a convenience store and disrespecting the girl statue, which prompted police investigations.
Investigation against Johnny Somali’s action
On October 31, the Seoul Mapo Police announced that Somali’s actions in the convenience store were the subject of an investigation for business obstruction. Somali is presently subject to a “exit ban” that prohibits him from leaving the country, in addition to a police investigation into allegations of assault and drug usage.
