Anne Abel, 71, A Bestselling Author, suffered an abusive childhood

Anne Abel is an author and storyteller best known for her memoir “Mattie, Milo, and Me,” which was published in April 2024. The 71-year-old author’s parents compelled her to make every life decision before she was finally free.

Abel wrote “Mattie, Milo, and Me,” a memoir about her self-healing journey with her children and pets. Despite chronic depression caused by her terrible history, Anne found solace as a mother, novelist, and storyteller.

The Barnes & Noble bestseller follows her journey with two rescue dogs: Mattie, a sweet and reassuring presence, and Milo, a challenging rescue dog with behavioral concerns.

Anne Abel’s early life and her statement regarding her abusive childhood

Anne Abel’s Instagram storytime tapes include many of her early childhood memories. Abel was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, by a Jewish family.

She had a tough childhood. As she describes in her book, her parents’ mistreatment caused her to develop serious depression in her early twenties.

Abel felt driven to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Tufts University after her father threatened to withdraw money for her undergraduate studies if she did not study chemistry.

Anne Abel’s professional journey as a writer

After deciding that chemistry was not for her, she pursued graduate publications and eventually obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago. She also obtained an MFA from The New School for Social Research.

Following a lengthy professional hiatus to determine her future, Anne pursued photography and storytelling.  She eventually stopped shooting photographs and focused on the narrative.

Abel began her writing career by contributing freelance articles to Lilith Magazine, the Philadelphia Daily News, and the Philadelphia Weekly. The debut book received critical acclaim and was well-liked by readers, particularly those who care about animals.

She also wrote a weekly piece, The Homefront, for Main Line Welcomat. Abel went on to teach English and creative writing at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Anne Abel’s professional writing morphed into storytelling, prompting her to engage in The Moth StorySLAM events in Chicago and New York City.

Her debut memoir was inspired by her award-winning narrative of adopting Milo, a tough dog. The biography delves into her own battles with melancholy as well as her experience caring for dogs, namely the love she had with Mattie, her first dog, and the difficult road she took with Milo, an aggressive rescue dog.

Following Mattie, Milo, and Me, Abel intends to issue Anne Abel’s second memoir, “Alive!” in 2025.

This work will document her decision to fly alone to Australia to see Bruce Springsteen rather than entering a psychiatric facility for the third time.

This memoir is likely to continue Abel’s personal healing and transformation theme through unusual, heart-felt decisions.
