In 1971, his composition “Me and Bobby McGee” became his former paramour Janis Joplin’s posthumous No. 1 smash hit.

He began pursuing a side career in acting in the mid-1970s, and he gained notoriety in Hollywood by playing opposite Barbra Streisand in the popular adaptation of “A Star Is Born.”

Kris received the Golden Globe for “best performance by an actor” in 1977. Kristofferson’s acting carrer did not get enough boost after his performance in Michael Cimino’s 1980 Western epic “Heaven’s Gate.” He gradually regained his professional footing in the 1980s. 

He co-starred in Alan Rudolph’s 1984 feature film “Songwriter” alongside Willie Nelson. Their joint music score became nominated for an Academy Award.
